“Hillsong Channel is where I go for peace, growth, understanding and worship.”
“My healing began with a song I remembered from 2007. That song was Hillsong United’s ‘Lead Me to the Cross,’ which was performed at our church in Southern California. The lyrics had such a profound impact on me. I tucked them into my heart and carried them with me everywhere – over many miles and years, while my husband and I worked on private yachts – my husband as the captain and me as the chef and stewardess.
It was a nomadic and stressful life. Our last stint in 2014 was particularly difficult – I reached my breaking point. My body shut down and I developed symptoms of chronic fatigue. At the same time, my mentally disabled sister, who had been battling lymphoma, was given one year to live. Although physically I was a wreck, I helped care for my beautiful little sister until she went to be with the Lord in April 2015. That’s when I took to my own bed, dosed up on painkillers, with no answers from the doctors. I had shooting pain everywhere, migraines, severe joint and muscle pain and electric shock and numbness through my limbs. I was diagnosed with Chronic Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. I remember thinking, Why me and why this unbearable and chronic pain?
I started praying a lot. Then, one night, a miracle happened. As I lay in bed in pain, the words of that deeply buried song flowed up from a secret place. ‘Lead me to the Cross …’ I Googled the lyrics and up came Hillsong Channel. I turned on the TV, and there was Brian Houston preaching. It was the support I needed at one of the lowest points of my life. Soon afterward, I was watching an episode of Café Theology and had a revelation of grace. I’d never really considered what Jesus had done to reestablish connection with us.
Today, I am a 24/7 Hillsong Channel watcher. From my first coffee in the morning, through the midnight hours of sleeplessness, Hillsong Channel is where I go for peace, growth, understanding and worship. At times, my Irish Catholic husband will walk into our bedroom and say, ‘Yep, she’s got her church channel on again.’ He laughs, but I know it’s impacted him as well. Since watching Hillsong Channel, some of the pain has decreased and I can feel myself getting stronger. Nowadays, I can leave the house for a few hours and do simple things like cooking dinner for my husband and walking my dogs. Each time I see Brian and Bobbie on the screen, I whisper, ‘Thank you … thank you for leading me to the Cross.’”
