“Hillsong Channel has been such a gift to me.”
“Seven years ago, I found myself lying on the floor of the emergency ward. At the age of 30, doctors had just diagnosed me with severe Ulcerative Colitis – which is a chronic bowel disease. I was given a raft of medications. At one point, I was taking up to 31 pills a day.
The side effects were horrific: seizures, loss of vision, muscle swelling. I lost hair and weight. I had mood swings and ended up using a walker for six months, at which point I was also diagnosed with inflammatory joint disease and chronic anemia. My world crumbled. I lost everything: my home, my car and my job. The quality of my life was sucked away.
What’s more, I was told I would have to have an ostomy bag for the rest of my life. As a 30-year-old female, this was unbelievably difficult. In all, I’ve had 12 major surgeries and nine of my organs removed. Two years ago, I had a stroke and developed Degenerative Disc Disease of the spine. I also discovered I was allergic to pain medication. There were times when I thought I was dying.
Amid all of this devastation, it was worship music – in particular, music by Hillsong United – that became my medicine. In that place of worship, I don’t feel any pain and I sense God’s tangible presence. Now that I have Hillsong Channel, I’m able to watch the praise and worship from my bedroom or from the hospital room. One time, I was in the waiting room before surgery and I logged onto my computer just as Taya was singing, ‘Not Today!’ I remember thinking, Okay Satan, you don’t get my thoughts, my time or my energy. I felt so peaceful. Even one of the nurses said, ‘How are you so calm?’ I assured her it was because of my faith and my God. Hillsong Channel has been such a gift to me.”
